Home Infusion Therapy: Management of Central Venous Catheter Occlusion
February 16, 2012 and March 15, 2012
Description
Central Venous Catheters (CVCs), widely used in patients in acute and home care settings, are often associated with complications such as catheter occlusions. Catheter occlusion is the most common non-infectious complication of central venous catheters and if left untreated can increase the patient’s risk for pain, thrombus formation and infection. In this web seminar, the etiology, assessment and interventions related to catheter occlusion will be discussed. Catheter care, preventive interventions, and the role of patient and family education in reducing the risk of occlusion in CVC’s used for home infusion therapy will be addressed.
Objectives
After this web based activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe at least 3 non-thrombotic causes of catheter occlusion.
- Describe 4 thrombotic causes of catheter occlusion.
- Discuss at least 3 effective strategies to use in reducing the risk of catheter occlusion.

Best Practices Recommendations for Home Infusion-Related Infections
February 9, 2012 and March 8, 2012
Description
Although the overall risk of infection in patients receiving home infusion therapy is low when compared with inpatient settings, all patients are at risk for infection primarily due to the presence of a vascular access device. Most of these infections are considered preventable. With implementation of infection control and prevention best practices, organizations have been able to markedly decrease the rate of central vascular access device related infections. This webinar will discuss the risk factors for infusion related infections in the homecare patients, the best practice recommendations for management and prevention with an emphasis on the key role of nurses in infection prevention.
Objectives
After this web based activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify risk factors for catheter related bloodstream infections in home infusion therapy.
- Describe evidence based practices to reduce the risk for infection in home infusion therapy patients.
- Recognize the key role of nurses in infection control prevention and apply best practices for home infusion.
